Samsung a877

Word on the street is that at&t will be releasing the new Samsung a877 phone before the end of the month. It is supposed to be all that and a bag of chips. It has a full touchscreen and a pull-out QWERTY keyboard (I am a fan of the full keyboards).

Among the additional bells and whistles being touted are:
  • 3 mega pixel camera with geotagging
  • Telnav GPS Navigato
  • Full HTML browser
  • Bluetooth
  • MP3 Player
  • etc.
It seems the big headline is the 3.2-inch WQVGA AMOLED touchscreen. I've picked up some on the WQVGA stuff over the last couple years, but "AMOLED?" Sounds like something off a mexican fusion restaurant menu to me.

Here is how Wiki explains it, "AMOLED is the acronym for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, an emerging display technology for use in mobile devices like mobile phones. OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn't require a backlight and AMOLED refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels." It goes into more detail after that if your interested....

Doesn't need a backlight huh? That does sound pretty cool. I am not currently an at&t user so I'm no exactly on the edge of my seat for the a877, but I'm sure the competitors are brewing something up to compete as we speak. I hope they hurry up. I need a new phone.
